Story?

Professionally – Since 2000 I’ve been working as a information security and business technology specialist for clients ranging from the very small to the very large.

I’ve worn a range of hats: hardcore network monkey beginnings; a fondly remembered season of pen-testing and security architecture; to my more recent life doing account  management and business development for a security company focused on PCI DSS compliance.

In 2008 I read the Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss and, rather than abandoning the “millstone” to pursue never-ending widget-funded travel, I became utterly fascinated with tech start-ups and private equity. This in combination with the more “business-focused” direction of my employment seeded what is a now relentlessly entrepreneurial approach to the world.

As a result, these days I spend most of my time doing one of three things:

• Consulting to and account managing start-ups and businesses on their information security, risk, compliance and online payments. I believe that a good information security strategy can help start-ups reduce their overall risk and be more attractive as investments.
• Product and go-to-market development for small businesses & upstarts, drawing on the “ghosts of techie past” to help them get the most of the Internet, technology, social media & outsourcing.
• If I’m not out saving the world from evil hackers or helping folk build their business I work on my own ventures via the Tall Poppy Group.

Personally – I am driven by a desire to learn, build and/or teach. If I can be doing one or more of these and call it “work” I am happy.
