Today's Useful Website Award: Domize.com

Domize.com solves the problem of needing a way to check the availability of lots of different domains in a short space of time (say, for example, whilst brainstorming an idea, or during one of those frantic lightbulb have-to-buy-that-freaking-domain-stat moments).

Their website, which is very Google-esque in its layout, lets you to enter the domain name that you’d like to try to acquire. As you type it does a search to determine if the .com, .net, .org, .biz or .com.au are available.

It’s full of AJAX-y goodness (i.e. you don’t have to hit “enter” to get a result, it just searches for you – think Google instant search), the results are accurate, and it is very fast and sleek to use.

How To Turn Off Absence/Alternate Greeting With Telstra

Admittedly this is a bit of a mundane post, but entrepreneurship is all about solving problems and this particular one, however trivial, drives me nuts on a regular basis.

I turn my alternate greeting on and off all the time, so I thought I’d jot down and share the combination of numbers needed to turn your absence or alternate greeting off with Telstra. This will save you having to listen to

  1. all of the prompts and listening and
  2. the entirety of your existing recorded absence message.

Here’s the process:

  1. Dial your voicemail (101).
  2. Once it picks up, dial in this combination of numbers: 3 – 1 – 3 – 4
  3. That’s it! You’re done.

Trust me, some day someone will Google this and leave a thank you in the comments section… I just know it.

What Have You Planned Tomorrow To Bring Your Idea To Life?

The worst possible thing you can do is nothing.

If you think you’ve got an idea that you think can change the world, chances are it can.

The one thing stopping it is your decision to commit to bringing it to life.

Before you go to sleep tonight write down one thing you will complete tomorrow to take your idea one step further to realization. Make a plan that contains one task and one task only, but make damn sure that you do that thing tomorrow.

A phone call. A letter. A blog post. A coffee.

Just freaking do it.

Launchrock – Add 10,000 Subscribers To Your Startup Before You Even Launch

Launchrock, The Most Meta Startup Ever… I love it when an idea gives birth to another idea…
Launchrock take that one step further – Seeing the rise in start-ups, and after seeing the success of the viral “Coming Soon” campaigns of Fork.ly and Hipster.com, the creators of Launchrock decided to put together a service that does one thing well: Generate as much interest in your start-up as possible BEFORE IT’S EVEN LAUNCHED. Hipster.com used the same viral method to achieve 10,000 sign ups in 3 days WITHOUT EVEN EXPLAINING WHAT THEY DO…!
Launchrock uses a simple viral mechanism:

  1. A visitor reaches your COMING SOON page (hosted and powered by Launchrock)
  2. They sign up with their email address as interested in participating in your BETA test (or some similar pre-launch incentive – priority access, etc…)
  3. Once signed up, a shortened URL is created for them. They are then encouraged to share the URL with as many people as possible to get them to sign up. The more people who sign up with their URL, the more likely they’ll receive the incentive.
  4. Lather, rinse, repeat for the other who sign up with the service.

Personally, I think this is genius.

One of the key indicators for prospective investors in a start-up is whether there is a market for it – This serves that purpose brilliantly.

Check it out in action here: http://su.pr/2iGeDw (yes, this is my Launchrock unique URL – I’d really like to get on to the damn service… That’s just how it works!)

Following Too Many Tweeps? Try This Twitter Bulk Unfollow Tool

Twitter is fantastic – I’m a massive fan.

A common issue with Twitter, especially for newer users, is getting to a point where you’re following too many people. Here’s why…

  • Often times you wind up inundated with so much noise (useless information) that you can’t find the signal (good information). This affects personal and business accounts.
  • For business tweeters it’s been shown that it affects how you are perceived on Twitter if you are following many and are only followed by few. Example? Take @charliesheen… At the time I write this he has 1,471,352 followers and is following 25. For better or worse, this just seems COOLER (which is the currency of social media) than @annoyingdotcom with 6 followers and following 2,445. True?
  • One more thing – Twitter only allows you to follow 2,500 account UNLESS you have over 2,500 followers yourself. Sometimes dumping old follows to bring on new ones who are more likely to follow you back is a good idea for building your follower count (this mostly applies to business tweeps).

Anyways, this is the tool for the job: http://geshout.com/unfollowtool.php

Cheap and nasty interface but boy does it do a good job…! You can elect to unfollow “lazy tweeters” (i.e. those who haven’t tweeted in xx days), select and unfollow, or select all and unfollow. Brilliant!

Just be aware – Sometimes Twitter gets cranky (read: suspends your account) if it identifies what it calls “aggressive follow/unfollow behavioral”. Go softly softly then ramp it up.

Do you have any good Twitter tools you can share? Post in the comments section below!

FYI – You Are Probably An Entrepreneur

Entrepreneur… It’s honestly one of my favorite words. There’s something so empowering and liberating about it – a label and a title that affords the wearer freedom and creativity in business…

What I DON’T like about the word is the sense of exclusivity around it, like it’s some high-bar country club for the “special business people”, those who are exceptionally intelligent, or those who have the “business gift”.

The word “entrepreneur” comes from two French words – entre (to enter) and prendere (to take). These two words were linked together in “entreperende”, which literally means “to undertake”, or “to start something”. The term was said to be coined by the French economist “Jean-Baptiste Say”, the same guy who came up with the phrase “If you build it, they will come.”

So here’s the thing – if you have started something… ANYTHING… in business you are an entrepreneur.

Adventures In Outsourcing – Contact Cleaning Part 1

I’ve decided to start sharing some of my experiences with outsourcing. It’s amazing what can be done, and hopefully what I share will give you some ideas.

A friend of mine contacted me with a problem – They had over 3000 contacts in their Outlook Email program that they’d accumulated over 10 years or more. The contacts were synchronized to their iPhone, and it was all a bit of a mess. They were after some way of cleaning up the data without doing it manually, like a program or tool.

I suggested outsourcing the data cleaning to the Philipines using oDesk… The response was the same as I normally get… “You can do that…?”

I put the following job description up on oDesk:

Hello. I have a large list of contacts exported from Outlook. There are some duplicates, misspelt duplicates, and others. In total I believe there to be about 3000 contacts in this list. I need a hard-working, self-starting and proactive data entry/analysis person to go through and “clean”; this list i.e.: Merge all duplicates into single contacts. If duplicate data exists for any contacts, use your ingenuity to make sure all the data is available.

Within 2 hours I had over 150 responses. I picked a lovely woman from the Philippines who had good feedback, had a history of work on oDesk (2,985 hours), and most importantly who’s personalized message to me about the job indicated they had a) understood the question and b) good speak very good English (which is important for communication).

Once I hired her using the oDesk process, I sent thought the following email with a CSV dump of my friends contacts attached:

Hi <Outsourcer’s Name>

Here you go…
I have compressed it into a CSV file. Please maintain the header row structure, as it has been taken directly from Outlook where it will be reimported.
The main thing is to merge duplicates. There are several entries that are duplicates with typos, etc… I trust you to use your discernment as to whether they are duplicates or not.
Remove any unusual characters like #, @, ! etc… from the titles.
Note that there are several entries for Companies, Services, etc… without a person attached to them. Please DO NOT merge these into other contacts. Please deduplicate these where necessary.
As a low priority please standardize the capitalization in the words.

If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to ask. However, I trust that with your skills and proactive approach you’ll be able to complete this task well without needing too much input from me.

Thanks!
Casey

That’s where we are up to so far… I’ll keep you posted with the progress.

NOTE: Yes, my friend did agree to let his contacts list sent to a 3rd party, yes, I made them sign an NDA, and yes, there is a slight risk involved in doing stuff like this. You have to evaluate if it is worthwhile on a case by case basis.

You should check out oDesk, it’s free to sign up and post jobs.
